Linda Farrow SS16 – Round sunglasses in black
Linda Farrow might not be a global household name. But, to those who step seamlessly from the catwalk shows of Milan onto the deck of a luxury yacht on the Côte d’Azur, she and her sunglasses have long been essential summer items.
Linda Farrow originally started out as a fashion designer at the height of London’s Swinging Sixties’ centre stage performance of international fashion. She cleverly identified a particular niche —sunglasses— and immediately took them to new heights. Establishing her own brand in 1970, she pioneered some of the shapes — big, bold, round, for example— that brought a younger riposte to the established styles of Hollywood glamour. Hers were sunglasses worthy of a generation of Janis Joplin rock ‘n roll or Ossie Clark bohemian chic.
The discreetly stylish and aficionados of fashion have followed Linda Farrow ever since. But, while her own brand has always retained an air of understated exclusivity, you may well be familiar with the work nonetheless. The list of famous fashion houses and designers for whom Linda Farrow has designed collections reads like a who’s who of anyone who has ever produced stand-out sunglasses: Yohji Yamamoto, Raf Simons, Oscar de la Renta, Dries Van Noten, Matthew Williamson, Kris van Assche, Bernhard Willhelm and Jeremy Scott. Like a Swiss movement inside any self-respecting watch, Linda Farrow’s sublime skill with frames and lenses has become an essential component of any desire-worthy sunglasses collection.
So why not try going straight to the horse’s mouth this summer? The current SS16 collection features a full gamut of directions for keeping the sun’s glare at bay. There are a number of elegant variations on large, round shapes that perfectly add the finishing touches to hippie chic looks, so hip this summer. A number of them are realised in interesting colour combinations and refined detailing that avoids the faux pas of looking like you’re going to a 70s theme party. By contrast, if the safari stylings that are also a big look this summer are more your thing, there are some beautiful versions of classic aviator frames, most of them in catchy combinations of metals, such as copper and aluminium. And, there are plenty of reworkings of the classics for those who can’t get through summer without a little Jackie O or Grace Kelly moment. No matter which style you go for, you’ll be joining the right beach club with Linda Farrow.
